Vivo Y400 Pro 5G Review: Should You Choose This Over Redmi and Realme?

My budget was ₹26,000 to ₹30,000 and I’d been going back and forth between the Redmi Note 14 Pro and a couple of Realme options for about two weeks. Then a colleague showed me his Vivo Y400 Pro and I spent ten minutes with it before changing my mind entirely. Bought it three weeks ago. Here’s what using it daily actually looks like.

The Design Is the First Thing You Notice

I got the Nebula Purple. Photos don’t do it justice in person the finish has a subtle depth to it that catches light differently at different angles without being flashy. The matte-like surface doesn’t pick up fingerprints the way glossy backs do. After three weeks of daily handling it still looks clean.

The 8GB virtual RAM expansion helps keep things responsive when I have many apps open. Switching back to something I’d opened earlier usually finds it still loaded rather than restarting from scratch.

Gaming I play BGMI casually. Medium settings work well for sessions of 30 to 40 minutes without heat issues or frame drops that interrupt play. For serious gaming the Redmi Note 14 series offers more raw processing power at similar prices. If gaming is your primary use case that’s worth comparing directly. For everything else the Dimensity 7300 handles the Y400 Pro’s daily demands comfortably.

Funtouch OS 15 on Android 15 is the cleanest Vivo software I’ve used. Previous Funtouch versions could feel busy and notification-heavy. This one is more restrained. There are pre-installed apps to remove during setup but after that it stays clean. Animations are smooth throughout.

Camera Natural Over Dramatic

The 50MP main camera at f/1.79 produces photos that look like what you pointed it at. That sounds like faint praise but it’s actually a deliberate choice that grows on you. The Redmi phones I tested before this sharpened edges aggressively which made photos look impressive immediately but slightly processed. The Vivo’s output looks natural accurate skin tones, balanced exposure, colors that match the scene.

Portrait mode subject separation is clean. Night mode brightens without turning everything orange the way some phones do. For daily photography, social media, and documenting things I’m genuinely happy with the results.

The 32MP front camera is where Vivo consistently delivers. Selfies come out detailed without the heavy beauty filter application that some brands default to. Video calls look clear. Several people have commented on my video quality in calls since switching which is the practical measure that matters.

Battery and 90W Charging

5500mAh and the phone is 182 grams. I mentioned this already but it bears repeating because it’s the engineering achievement that makes daily use feel genuinely different. Three weeks in and I’m charging once a day on heavy use days and sometimes skipping a day on lighter ones.

90W FlashCharge fills it quickly roughly 40 to 45 minutes from near empty. The included charger handles it and the cable is USB-C standard. I haven’t noticed the phone getting uncomfortably warm during fast charging which has been an issue with aggressive charging speeds on some other phones I’ve used.

5G dual standby both SIM slots support 5G simultaneously. The infrared blaster controls my TV and AC without a separate remote which is a small convenience I use more than I expected. Bluetooth 5.4 pairs quickly and stays stable. Wi-Fi dual band works without issues.

8GB + 128GB between ₹26,000 and ₹28,000. 8GB + 256GB between ₹28,000 and ₹32,000. No expandable storage on either variant so choose based on how much you store locally. I got the 256GB and the extra cost felt worthwhile for a phone I’ll use for two or three years without worrying about space.

Three Weeks In

The display quality and the weight-to-battery ratio are what made me choose this over the Redmi I’d been seriously considering. Three weeks of daily use and both continue to be things I appreciate. The camera produces photos I like sharing. The software runs cleanly. The battery lasts.
